Home Made Dungeon Keeper Levels

Welcome to our home made levels for Bullfrog's Dungeon Keeper.

The following levels were made by my brother Jim, Clare and myself using Bullfrog's DK editor which you can download here (approx 1.1MB) along with instructions on how to install it. In order to use the levels you will need either:
  • a copy of Dungeon Keeper Gold
  • or DeeperDungeons and a copy of the editor

If you don't have DK Gold or Deeper Dungeons then buy it - its dead cheap because its so old now. If you don't want to be bothered installing the editor then try out Oetelaer's site as he has a cunning way to play the levels as saved games instead (which i believe also works if you only have Dungeon Keeper) - it means missing out on our levels though.

The following tools are also great to have and will make your life far easier, especially if you fancy giving it a go yourself:
  • Script File Editor - Folks who have already given editting a go will know that the only downfall with it is that once your layout has been created you need a script file to run the level. Creating this script can be a bit daunting to start with. However this editor will help you knock up a quite complicated scriptfile in no time, regardless of your experience. It will also debug your script afterwards, finding errors that will stop your script from working. It is a must have for anyone editing scripts, regardless of experience. You could try visiting www.daish.net/ashfordania to get a later version if you prefer.
  • Script File Template Editors out there may also find this script template useful, saving alot of hassle keep looking up commands.
  • Level Manager - This map manager is essential if you are going to be downloading peoples maps so that you dont overwrite them
  • Formatted Creatures.txt - Have you ever wondered whilst visiting other DK sites where the in-depth knowledge of creatures, rooms and other snippets of info have come from? Have you ever been tempted to cheat a little by editting the creatures.txt file but found it impossible to read? Well here's a formatted version that, given a bit of study, will reveal lots of info about the game.
So the levels! There are 5 sets of zip files one from each of the creators, one multiplayer and one with all of the levels in it. Once you have the editor installed just unzip the files to your LEVELS directory. The table below is a guide to what you will find in all of the zip files:

Goonville Steve 226 Multiplayer 4 My first multiplayer map and my favourite although we never get to the end of it without the game crashing (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Sprout Town Steve 227 Multiplayer 4 A nice relaxing game, attack when you are ready (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Arena Steve 228 Multiplayer 4 Separated by lava, all your creatures have ranged weapons to kill opposing creatures (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Ghetto Steve 229 Multiplayer 4 Really huge level with upwards of 200 individual rooms. As a consequence it takes forever to load, in fact, i am not convinced it works at all, I have only included it here because i swear i remember playing it at some point! (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Nimsumn Steve 230 Multiplayer 2 Lots and lots of hidden creatures - get your normal quota before exploring too far (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Isle of Doggs Steve 231 Multiplayer 2 2 Boats - a multiplayer version of Pirates (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
One Eyed King Steve 232 Multiplayer 4 Low powered creatures are the name of the game so dont be too quick to throw away your flies (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Siege Steve 233 Multiplayer 2 Work Co-operatively with your opponent to defeat the good lord hiding in his castle....then kill each other! Can also be played as single player but is a bit easy (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
White Hell Clare 234 Multiplayer 2 Clare's first Multiplayer map (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)
Poke Your Portal Steve 235 Multiplayer 4 Was a good idea but unfortunately doesnt work...if i get time i might redo this as a single player mission (See multiplayer note at the bottom of the page)

General Known bugs:
  • If you save a game then return to it at a later time then any messages you receive from then on will be blank - don't know why!
  • Not sure that all the levels work properly with the 3D version of the game.
  • If your PC is a bit slow you may find some of the levels a bit easy. I make and test them on a reasonably fast machine so the difficulty is about right until you play on a slow one
Important Multiplayer Notes:
  • Multiplayer games never seem to finish on our PCs i.e. you play for a certain time then the game crashes. Might be related to the number of creatures in the game.
  • To play IPX games you need to get hold of the multiplayer patch. The one i have is unofficial and i am uncertain about its origin, content and whether it might be causing the problem described above, so am not going to post it here.
  • Due to the problem described above we have not been able to fully test the multiplayer levels so they may not actually be any good.
  • The multiplayer levels require you to have my versions of 'levels.txt' and 'Dd1lev.txt' (included in the zip file). If you already have multiplayer levels by someone else installed, and are not totally comfortable with editing these txt files and also the script files for the individual maps, then dont bother downloading mine (multiplayer)....unless you dont mind losing the multiplayer maps you already have. A compromise would be to only unzip one of the txt files and so, for example, play my multiplayer levels in Dungeon Keeper and the levels you already have in Deeper Dungeons. You could also see if the latest level manager tool will sort them out for you. Hope that made sense!
